BATTALION 14 ISTS DAY

On Monday, March 19, Battalion 14 members participated in scheduled training sessions presented by members of our In Service Training Section.

Members assigned to Task Force 60, Engine 86, Light Force 102 and Engine 108 took part in Swift Water Rescue training during the morning session at the DWP Jensen Filtration Site in Sylmar.

Swift Water Rescue Techniques and Safety Considerations were presented by an ISTS cadre consisting of A/O Tim Foor(FS 98), F/F Chris Pedini (FS 10), Eng. Craig Wobig (FS 9) and FF/PM David Danielson (FS 88).

After all members were suited up in the proper safety gear and PPEs they completed several actual rescue operations in both team and Company configurations. One of the most effective techniques for the rescue of a person in swiftwater conditions involved the use of a short section of inflated 2 1/2" hose (Bypass) attached to a sliding rope system.

Developed by members of the Long Beach Fire Department, the configuration allows the inflated hose to close around the victim for an easier capture and a more effective means of successfully rescuing the victim.

The afternoon session was held at Fire Station 89 in the new Regional Training Facility and consisted of several exercises focusing on Search and Rescue operations. The classroom session and practical exercise was presented by the ISTS cadre consisting of Capt. Paul Nelson (ISTS), Capt. Steve Ruda (FS 27), Capt. Steve Owens (FS 76), Capt. John Paxton (FS 26) and A/O Cary Fenzke (FS 26).

The practical exercise consisted of a series of props that challenged members in "real life" Search and Rescue Company operations. Working in teams and fully suited up (in PPEs and "on air") Battalion 14 members demonstrated their various techniques for the rescue of trapped and/or downed victims.

Many members commented on the effectiveness of the props that were constructed on the Apparatus Floor of the Training Facility. Construction of the props was spearheaded by A/O Denny Waite.

On behalf of all of the members of Battalion 14 we would like to thank the In Service Training Section, led by Battalion Chief Rob Willcox, for this OUTSTANDING training.
Realistic and practical, it is this type of training that will directly contribute to an increased level of safety for our personnel and a greater level of success in our efforts to protect the public we serve.

Great Training!
