Chief Curry,
I am a civilian living in Portland, OR. I was a resident of Los Angeles from 1974 to 1987, and followed the LAFD on a VHF Scanner. I had gotten used to the terminology of the LAFD, but in the last 19 years, I have lost some of my knowledge. For civilians, and brother/sister firefighters from other departments, can you define Task Force, Light Force and some of the common terms you use when describing incidents.
I remember visiting 102 a couple of times when I worked at Los Angeles Valley College. Also, I met Steve Ventura when he was PIO in the early 80's and received a tour of OCD from him.
Thank you for your time.
Stay safe,
Mark

Mark, thanks for your continued interest in the LAFD. Actually, I'm a Firefighter/Staff Assistant with the Department...I comprise the "better half" of the Battalion Command team.
We will run a comprehensive post describing these terms, but in a nutshell...here goes.
In Battalion 14, we have 7 stations. Two are Task Force stations, four are Single Engine stations and one is a Light Force house.
The basic units of the LAFD are the Engine and the Light Force.
An Engine carries water, hose and can pump at an incident. Four members are assigned to an Engine: a Captain I, an Engineer and two Firefighters.
A Light Force consists of an aerial-ladder Truck, which is ladder-intensive and equipment-intensive, and an Engine. Six members are assigned to a Light Force: a Captain II, an Apparatus Operator, an Engineer and three Firefighters.
An Engine company and a Light Force together form a Task Force. Therefore, a Task Force has two Engines, one Truck and ten members.
The Task Force concept allows us to use them together on a complicated task, or to split them into two companies (Engine and Light Force) for different tasks. At Task Force stations, Engines usually run more calls than the Light Forces. However, we have the busiest Light Force in the City at FS 102, as it has no Engine to protect it! More to come in a future post.
