BATTALION 14 RAPID INTERVENTION DRILL

Following a short classroom session each company was asked to demonstrate their standard operation for performing a Rapid Intervention rescue of a missing firefighter. The exercise was conducted as a "walk thru" and those not actually in the op

The scenario for the exercise was a fire in a 1-story commercial. The company designated as the RIC was told by the commanding officer of a company that had just exited the structure that a member from that company was missing. There was no radio contact with that member and there was no PASS device activation. In addition, there were two hoselines going into the only entrance portal in different directions and it was unclear which hoseline the missing member had been using.
RIC members were suited up in full PPEs and were "on air". To simulate poor visibility the RIC members used obscured facepieces. Members were asked to utilize all of the tools that they would normally use in their operation and to

consider utilizing any "building feaures" that could be to their advantage during their operation.
All companies displayed solid ops and were able to locate and remove the missing and downed member. Many lessons were learned and will be posted on this site in the very near future.
