A LEGEND IS LOST

It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of LAFD Captain Lane Kemper.
Lane's deeds touched every single member of our Department and many other departments across the Nation. Lane dedicated his career to making us all better firefighters and better people. He never did it for credit or accolades, he did it because he cared for the LAFD and he cared for us.
Our sympathy and prayers go out to Lane's family and loved ones. Each and every one of us share in the loss of this great man and we all need to pull together to support the Kemper family.
We ask that you take this opportunity to post your comments as a tribute to Lane. Please feel free to express your feelings or recall a memory of Lane. Your comments will be forwarded to Lane's family and friends. We will post your comments above and will not publish another article on this site until September 21. We do this to honor Lane Kemper.

Lane was a legend. He was a true professional who made a huge contribution to the LAFD and the fire service. The man will truly be missed.
Lane was one of the finest gentlemen I've ever known.
Always a pleasure to be around even at raging fires. Lane and I go way back. When a captain at FS-10 he always made sure I had the best pictures available (I worked for the LA Times at the time)
Never, in the years I knew Lane did I ever hear a harsh word from him about anything or anyone. He was always the professional. It was my pleasure to share a few laughs and a few cups of coffee with Lane at the station late at night after a greater. He was, still is and always will be a close friend and I will miss him dearly.

It is never easy to lose a brother in the fire service. What makes it harder is when you lose one of your own, such as a legend like Lane Kemper. I was fortunate enough when I was assigned to Battalion 1 to have been able to work around Lane. You had always heard about him, and when you worked side-by-side with him, all that you had heard was definately true. My condolances go out to all of Lane's family and friends. Although he has been taken from us, take a moment to enlighten yourself on all he has touched in his life and even though he is gone, his legacy will always live on! You will truly be missed Capt. Kemper! Sincerely, Firefighter Steven Hamm, FS-89 B
Throughout a firefighters career there are certain people that affect your life. Cpt. Kemper was one of those people that you wanted to be like. You could see the love for the job, the excitement he had, and the genuine compassion for his co-workers. Everything I know and teach about Forcible Entry, I absorbed from Cpt Kemper. My condolences to his family and the LAFD. Rob Gagne, Costa Mesa FD
