CONDEMNED HOUSES SERVE AS PRACTICE SITE

Battalion 14 companies were afforded a rare opportunity to drill on some vacant dwellings over the weekend. A bungalow-style complex in the 11100 block of Huston St. is being torn down to make way for condominiums. Special thanks to Mr. Cliff Ezeleigh, who offered us the buildings.

FF Hartwell (89C) and FF Elefante (89C) ascend to begin simulated roof operations.

BATTALION 14 MEMBERS TOUR FIRE MUSEUM

On Friday, August 11 Battalion 14 "B" Platoon members visited the LAFD Museum and Fallen Firefighters Memorial at Old Fire Station 27 in Hollywood. Following a brief presentation on the Wellness Program members were given a personal tour of the Museum by 2004 Firefighter of the Year Captain II Jim Finn.

The Museum and Memorial volunteers have dedicated thousands of hours of their time in an effort to put together what is already a fitting tribute to the history and lore of our Department. Battalion 14 members were very impressed with the Museum and the items on display. On behalf of all of our members we thank you for your efforts and would like you to know that they are very much appreciated.

PHYSICAL RESCUE 8/12/05

Battalion 14 responded to a single vehicle high speed traffic accident with a Physical Rescue at the intersection of Sherman Way and Laurel Canyon Bl. early Friday morning. First arriving units found a single compact sedan that had crossed over the center divider while headed eastbound on Sherman Way at a high rate of speed. The vehicle had become airborne and struck a large concrete block building, rolled several times and come to rest up-side down trapping the two occupants inside.

LF 89 and LF 60 immediately initiated a jaws operation utilizing spreaders and shears while E 89, E 60 and LF 102 assisted with Scene Safety and EMS ops. RA 89 and RA 60 assisted by RA 102 attempted to stabilize the patients and eventually transported them to Trauma Centers in critical condition.

HOLLYWOOD HILLS BRUSH FIRE 8/9/05

Battalion 14 responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire in the Hollywood Hills on Tuesday. The incident was located just East of the 2000 block of Nichols Canyon Road. First arriving units found a fuel and terrain driven fire on a steep South/West facing slope that was immediately endangering multiple structures along Nichols Canyon, Wattles Drive and Astral Drive.

Battalion 5 Commander Chris Kawai was the initial Incident Commander and set up an agressive attack with a request for 20 Engine Companies and all available Water Dropping Helicopters. Companies were rapidly deployed adjacent to threatened structures and utilized handlines to control the spread of the fire.

Eventually under the command of Deputy Chief Mario Rueda an LFD Commitment of 50 companies, 8 Command Teams, 4 Helicopters and 1 Tractor Unit combined with LA County Fire resources including Engine Companies, 2 Command Teams, 1 Helicopter and 6 Camp Crews in limiting the fire to approximately 20 acres. There were no injuries and no structures were damaged.

The Battalion 14 Command Team was assigned as the Air-Recon Officer and assisted Incident Command with the coordination of Water Drops, Aerial Reconnaissance, Incident Status and Company Placement.

A rapidly moving I-Zone (Interface) Fire in steep and inaccessible terrain is certainly a challenge. The Battalion 14 Commanders would like to salute all of the members whose quick actions and excellent tactics kept the overall damage from a potentially dangerous fire in the Hollywood Hills to a minimum.

Nice Job!

TORCH RELAY COMING TO BATTALION 14

The 2005 Fallen Firefighters Memorial Torch Relay will be coming to Battalion 14 the week of September 4, 2005. This is a great event with a goal of raising funds for our Fallen Firefighters Memorial which will be displayed in front of the LAFD Fire Museum at old Fire Station 27 in Hollywood.

The most important item to note is that we will host the relay on September 11. It is imperative that we give an all out effort to fairly represent all of our fallen members and specifically honor all those who made the ultimate sacrafice on 9/11.

For those members wishing to volunteer to assist with planning the event please contact Firefighter Jason Teter here at Fire Station 60 "B" Platoon. Your assistance and/or suggestions are welcome as we would like to make this a group effort. Our goal is to have at least one member of each station in the Battalion to be part of the planning group.

Thank You!
